Your Life Stories Matter

You have stories and wisdom to share with the world. When you bear witness to what you have seen and known, you find new meaning in your life. And by creating graphic memoir, you can share your life with others, as well as help others see how to find meaning in their own lives!

Join graphic memoirist and award-winning novelist Beth Trembley in a class designed to help you understand what makes memoir a unique and meaningful genre and gives you tools to create your own meaningful pieces, short and long.

Beth has been teaching writing for over thirty years, focusing on comics for the last five. She is the facilitator of SAW’s ongoing Graphic Memoir Intensive.

In this course Beth will take you through four weeks of in-depth exploration of graphic memoir and challenges to help you make your own.

Why is Graphic Memoir So Challenging?

Beth says, “It wasn’t until I began to create my own graphic memoir that I began to realize the deep riches that came with telling my story in words and pictures, not just words alone. I have a Zen saying taped up in my studio:  The most dangerous thing in the world is to think you understand something.  Working on memoir in comics helped me see how much I did not understand about certain events in my life.  It helped me find new wisdoms, one of which is that I most likely will never fully understand my memories of my life.  And that’s okay!  That is where the wisdom lies… in the gaps and mysteries.”

What stories do you yearn to tell? What new meanings might emerge if you explore and reflect on your life through comics?

Instructor Bio:

Elizabeth Trembley, Ph.D, is the creator of the graphic memoir, Look Again (Street Noise Books, 2022). She is also a Lambda Literary Award-winning mystery novelist and writing teacher of more than three decades.

Beth views her role as helping students increase the power of their stories. She believes that people often psych themselves out wondering "who would ever want to read this?" about their work. She knows that if you really want to be read by others, you need to understand how to shape a story to showcase your authentic insights. Knowing the basics helps you innovate, and writing to be read by others will help you create a more diverse and just world.

Beth trained in literature and in innovation and creativity in places as diverse as the University of Chicago and Disney University. Through her classes, hundreds of students have drafted their first novels, explored digital storytelling, crafted personal essays, and reflected on their lives through memoir, both in prose and in comics.
