From the Six-month Graphic Novel Development Intensive:
"I feel like this course has been so transformative, it gave me meaning and purpose." - Michael Aschner
"I was always like, 'Does this work? Is this transition working?' and just having separate eyes is really, really useful." - Maia Iotzova
"There was definitely a point where I was like, 'Am I going to run out of momentum?' And I realize now, that is just not going to happen." - Barry Sawicki
"The community here has made me realize I have some talent, I have something funny and maybe even something important to say in this book." - Darlene Campbell
"I've been drawing everyday for 6 months now and it's just like, blown everything up in my world because I feel like I've really found a home, like I am a graphic novelist. That's what I am." - Layne Glasgow
From Storytelling Flow:
"I'm really pleased with how quickly a (somewhat) cogent plot has developed from minimal voluntary invention on my part. …Another thing that is interesting about this is that it's started me sketching again, which I honestly have not done to any great degree in probably five or six years." - Theodore Malian
"It's a lot more fun that when I'm stubborn with my ideas. I really do feel like I'm on a ride... Its brought a little " i can" back into my creative. Making stories is so on the " individual " and im so caught up in the daily grind of meeting the necessities of the day to day, that its really hard to shift gears and do what i really want to do. I think the things you taught us in the beginning and throughout will help me set aside time for my art more. At least i hope it does :)" - James Sexton
I really like this exercise and I haven't stopped doodling for the last couple of days! - Kayla Placencio
For the first time ever, I have the storyline for a comic! I feel like I'm just starting to hear my own voice. Yay!!! - Charl Elias
So I just wanted to say that this class is / was plenty rad. I have never really written a comic in this way, and I think it is really helping to get me "unstuck"…this class is doing a number on me, so thanks! - Robert Stephens
One of the great things about this course is the positivity. Other places online are often about rejection and I didn't realize how toxic that was to the creative process until I came here. Please don't change that! :-) The improvisational "say yes to everything" approach is magical. And fun, frankly. - Ayal Pinkus
This was a lot of fun. New ideas and details keep jumping out that I wasn't expecting and I feel like I am really intimately getting to know this character... - Paul Jeffrey
From Depth and Details:
Justine takes a lot of the mystery out of composing a solid drawing, explains techniques that anyone can use, and does it in clear, simple terms. Taking this class was kind of like watching that show where magicians reveal how their tricks are done and realizing that with some practice, you can do them too. If you're struggling or not progressing with your work, take this class. If you're on the fence about taking this class, just TAKE THIS CLASS! - Dave Hotstream
An amazing experience! Justine Andersen has a unique take on how to get to the root of rendered depth and where to find and place meaningful details to serve composition. If you sit and do the work, like I did, you might actually stretch (and surprise) yourself. This was my first SAW class, and I was so bowled over by it, I found myself neglecting my other work to get back to this coursework.
I'm so glad I chose to spontaneously jump into this class on a friend's recommendation (a day into the start of class, too!) as it was a super-rewarding experience. You cats have something special here, I hope to catch another class soon. I've pretty much sworn off on at least one other comic-tutoring site, since this one offers a superior experience. - Scott LeMien
For me it was a mind-blowing experience. I feel stupid for not having noticed what Justine pointed out. I see it in all the works of all the artists I admire now: layered depth, structural contrast, for readability, also used to let the image tell a story. Justine illustrated that with many amazing examples, going through each in detail. My approach to designing compositions has changed and I will be processing the information I got from this course for months to come.
Justine, thank you so much for giving this course! You haven't seen me much, but believe me when I say it really changed me. Thank you! - Ayal Pinkus
