Are you looking to loosen up your drawings? Have you been struggling to find a way to experiment with different image making techniques on your own? In this workshop Anthony Aiuppy will introduce you to various methods and techniques to get you playing with traditional and alternative materials, and take your finished comics to the next level. 

Through demonstrations of his own process, Anthony will address using reference images, drawing from art history, utilizing perspective, drawing the figure and thinking about texture, gradient and value in coloring. 

Some experience in drawing and familiarity with materials recommended. This class is offered entirely online. 


Required Materials:

-- Lead pencil;

-- Eraser;

-- Notebook or paper;

-- Access to the internet;

-- Photo references;

-- Patience, a curious mind, thinking cap, willingness to ask questions.

Optional materials (bring them if you got them): 

-- Sharpies and other markers, pens, pastels, crayons, colored pencils or any other material you want to use to create texture and lines (ie: ground charcoal, ground graphite, colored inks);

-- A t-square, drafting triangles, French curve; 

-- Painter’s tape, clipboard;

-- If you would like to work in Procreate/Photoshop bring those supplies as well and we can discuss how to load and create digital textures and brushes to help enhance drawing digitally.

Materials Anthony will be demonstrating:

-- Drawing paper (9x12 bristol recommended but any 80lb+ paper);

-- Watercolors (crayola set is perfect);

-- Watercolor brushes;

-- Cups for water and ink;

-- Waterproof Black India Ink;

-- Dip pen or nibs (Hunt 102 recommended);

-- Bamboo chopsticks;

-- Gel matte medium (2 or 4oz);

-- Various size brushes for painting and drawing in ink/watercolor.

About the instructor:

Anthony Aiuppy is a visual artist, art educator, and writer. Born and raised in the Midwest, he permanently transplanted to Jacksonville, Florida in 2003. He holds an MFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design. His artwork has been shown in solo and groups exhibitions in the Southern and Mid Atlantic U.S., including the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens (Jacksonville, Florida), Andalusia Farm: Home of Flannery O’Connor (Milledgeville, Georgia), and the Edgar Allan Poe Museum (Richmond, Virginia). Currently his art practice focuses on sequential storytelling through the medium of comics and zines.

10-12 Session 1 Drawing the figure

12-2 Lunch Break

2-4 Session 2 Drawing the dynamic figure and comics

4-7:30 Informal time for work, Tony will have his studio set up from 5pm-6pm to work on pages and walk through decision making and field questions and give feedback


Sunday, July 18

9:30-10 Breakfast together

10-12 Session 3 Value, texture, environment and atmosphere in comics

12-2 Lunch Break

2-4 Session 4 Mixed media value, texture, environment and atmosphere in comics continued

4-5:30 Final session, Techniques and materials Q+A, How to apply theses processes to digital, End of day

This course is offered on a sliding scale, pay what you can based on your income starting at $149.
